Sustainability
At Nyon Hostel, we are committed to preserving the beautiful planet we live on and minimising our environmental impact. From the design stage, it was clear to us that sustainability would be at the heart of our philosophy and would influence every part of the hostel.
We are proud to produce 11,000 kWh of electricity a year from our photovoltaic panels, covering around a quarter of our electricity needs.
Although our electricity is not yet entirely green, we have installed LED lights and motion and light sensors to avoid wasting energy.
Our hot water comes mainly from solar panels, and we have set ourselves the ambitious target of eliminating the use of gas by 2026 by adopting a remote heating system (Thermorésô project run by the town of Nyon). To save water, our showers are equipped with flow reducers, and our toilets offer two flush options.
We also promote soft mobility: most of our staff live in Nyon and use environmentally-friendly means of transport to get to work.
We recently replaced our plastic room cards with wooden ones and introduced a ‘free food’ system in the kitchen, allowing our guests to share food that is still edible to reduce waste.
Always on the lookout for new ideas, we invite our customers and partners to come up with new ideas.
ibex fairstay accompanies and certifies hotel and lodging companies on their way to a sustainable business management. The holistic support includes the five dimensions management, ecology, regionalism, social affairs and finances. A catalogue of measures as well as supported calculations and analyses are used to identify useful opportunities for improvement. Nyon Hostel was awarded the IBEX fairstay silver label in November 2023.
We are Swisstainable. We are part of the sustainability program Swisstainable and classified at Level III – leading. The sustainability program Swisstainable unites businesses and organizations along the entire Swiss tourism sector. With our participation, we commit ourselves to continuous sustainable business development, pursue measures in the field of sustainability and thus make a concrete contribution to a sustainable Swiss tourism.
The basic product, the CECB, is the official energy label of the cantons and consists of a four-page document that indicates the quality of the building envelope and the overall energy balance of a building, as well as its direct CO2 emissions, on a scale of seven classes (A to G). The CEBS is based on a standard calculation method. The same criteria and calculation values apply throughout Switzerland.
All guests staying at the Nyon Hostel receive a free travel pass valid for several zones in the Nyon region. To receive this card, you need to fill in your details (surname, first name, date of birth) via the form sent by e-mail/by your reservation platform. With this free ticket, you can go to Geneva, for example, paying only for the Coppet – Geneva journey, as the Explore card is valid between Nyon and Coppet. Please note: you need to take a train that stops at the intermediate station, so in this case it’s the Coppet station. It is not necessary to get off the train at Coppet.
